La Forbie is a lost battlefield, the land on which it sits having been fought over and redrawn many times. The area where the battle was probably fought is now overrun by the suburbs of the modern Gaza City in a confusion of roads, settlements and industrial parks, leaving almost no indication as to what the land was like in the 13th century. Fortunately an artist, David Roberts, captured a pastoral scene of the area (entitled Gaza, March 21st 1839 ) during an artistic tour he took of the Middle East in the 1830s that conveys an idea of a landscape that, when he painted it, hadn’t changed a great deal since medieval times.
